Airtel to start VoiP call pack priced 75 across India for prepaid users shortly in a phased manner. Voip calls on Airtel 2G or 3G data packs will no longer be free at all. After the announcement of regular data charge applicability on VoiP calls being transmitted over Airtel 2G or 3g data packs, Airtel users need to pay at 4p/10KB on 3G and, 10p/10KB on 2G internet plans.
Airtel VoiP special pack was expected to be launched shortly after the official statement. Airtel is very popular among young for its high-speed 2G and 3G internet service. Aafter sudden termination of free VoiP service on prepaid and postpaid data packs, Bharti Airtel will face a huge ‘bye bye’ message or ‘Mobile Number Portability’ from people who prefer Airtel data plans for connecting near-ones living abroad or, making free STD calls.
Airtel VoiP pack comes with price of Rs 75 which offers just 75MB data for 28 days after the date of pack activation. This pack is exclusively for prepaid users. Postpaid voip pack will be online shortly. According to Airtel, VoiP pack will enable customers to make around 200 to 250 minutes of free VoiP calls. Latest VoiP pack seems not to be very popular among prepaid subscribers since users who opt-in new ‘VoiP pack 75’ has a chance of being charged of Rs 1000 for VoiP calls that uses 1GB data !!!
Airtel users having a tendency of using VoiP Calls on Skype or Viber or Line, Now, It needs to make a compulsory VoiP Pack recharge along with regular 2G or 3G data packs to get rid of whopping data charge from Airtel for ‘VoiP services using VoiP enabled apllications’.
Airtel is going to make aware its customers about new rule for VoiP calls through SMS & USSD service that’s why VoiP Special plan will take time to be online across different circles and, will be rolled out in phased manner. Data packs already activated on or before December 24, 2014 will get free VOIP Calls service but then special terms on VoiP calls usage will be active as per Airtel rule.
Update (Dec 30, 14): In responce to TRAI statement, Airtel halted roll out of new VoiP plans for now.
