Tether Android Phone to Router
Before start working on tutorial be sure to have following components:
- Android phone
- Data cable
- WiFi Router
- Power bank (optional)
Thanks to ‘Of Modems and Men’ for creating special router firmware file called ROOter which is further based on firmware from the OpenWRT project. Latest release of ROOter is GoldenOrb.
In simple word – All you need to do is updating your Router current firmware with GoldenOrb – This will help you to tether Android to router. You can later update ROOter with Router official firmware to restore Router in-built features.
ROOter Firmware supported Routers: TP-Link. DLink, Netgear, Linksys, Asus, Xiaomi, Huawe, Mercury, WD, GL.iNet, Nexx, Ubiquiti, Pirelli, Banana Pi, Raspberry Pi etc.
Step 1: Go to ROOter firmware download page
Step 2: Check latest version of firmware supporting your Router
ROOter supports many of available popular Routers, We’ve used TP-Link MR3020 for instance. You can follow same tutorial for any router supporting ROOter firmware.
# Now Connect power cable to Router
Step 3: Connect Router to PC/Mac using RJ-45 cable (Check router box for this cable) and wait till Network is detected.
Alternatively, you can turn on Router > Connect mobile to Router WiFi and follow steps below. We recommend you to better us RJ-45 cable over WiFi during firmware update.
Step 2: Open Internet browser (Firefox/Chrome/IE) > Enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 or any other IP (Check router box or model for IP) that resolve Router Web Configuration panel or Router Control Panel.
Step 4: Sign in Admin panel and find ‘System Tools’ option then ‘Firmware Upgrade‘
Step 5: Once your are on Router’s ‘Firmware upgrade‘ or ‘Firmware update‘ page > Choose ‘Browse’ to select ‘ROOter firmware‘ and then click ‘Upgrade‘ or ‘Update‘ button to start process.
It will take few seconds to complete. Once update/upgrade finished, unplug Router from PC & Power cable and connect again.
Step 6: In seconds, PC will connect to Ethernet Network created by ROOter.
Step 7: Open browser and type : 192.168.1.1 > press ‘Enter’ button > Login to Control panel ( default User name: admin and Password: admin)
Step 8: After login, following status page becomes available for users.
Remember: ROOter firmware includes numerous settings for customization but use them with care otherwise you may find lots of difficulties.
Step 9: Select ‘System‘ then again ‘System‘
Under ‘General Settings‘ just click ‘Sync with browser‘ to fix Local time > Brows down and click ‘Save & apply‘ button.
Step 10: Now select ‘Administration‘ under ‘System‘ > Enter ‘Router Password‘ – This is password for Router’s control panel.
Select ‘wan1‘ under ‘Interface‘ which is located under ‘Dropbear Instance‘
Step 11: Now select ‘Modem‘ then ‘Connection info‘
Under ‘Modem 1 Information‘ > Enter APN : jionet for Jio 4G or any other APN. You can set custom DNS server > Scroll to bottom and click ‘Save‘ button.
Step 12: Now select ‘Network‘ then ‘WiFi‘
Under ‘Wireless Overview‘ you will find two Wireless Network mode, Click ‘EDIT‘ button on first row (Master Mode)
And change settings like the way as we describe:
# Under ‘Device Configuration‘, select ‘General Setup‘
- Operating Frequency : Mode: N, Channel: 11, Width: 40Mhz
- Transmit Power: Maximum (13dBm)
## Under ‘Interface Configuration‘, select ‘General Setup‘
- ESSID: anything you like or leave default
- Mode: Access point
- Network: lan
- Tick ‘Hide ESSID‘ to Hide WiFi broadcasting (Optional)
- Tick ‘WMM Mode’ to play audio/video file on network over WiFi network (Optional)
###Under ‘Interface Configuration‘, select ‘Wireless Security‘
- Encryption: WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK Mixed Mode
- Cipher: Auto
- Key = Enter WiFi password
Now click ‘Save & Apply‘ button to make changes permanent.
You have successfully configured TP-Link MR3020 router for next steps.
Step 13: Disconnect cables from Router (Rj-45 & Power cable) > Now Connect Router to power cable once again
Step 14: Wait few seconds > Turn on WiFi in Android mobile > Check Router WiFi network is available or not
Step 15: Once Router WiFi is available > Take ‘Mobile data cable‘ > Plug in USB 2.0 end to router and Micro USB point to Android phone.
Step 16: Turn on ‘Cellular data‘ in Android mobile
Step 17: Go to Android phone ‘Settings‘ > then ‘More‘ > Select ‘Tethering & portable hotspot‘ > Now Turn on ‘USB tethering‘
You are completely ready to enjoy long distance WiFi access from any WiFi enabled device. For longer distance you may buy WiFi Range Extender.
You may later change Router settings update ROOter firmware and customize many more thing.
How to tether Android to Router and connect HotSpot
Now when you need WiFi connection : Just Power on Router > Connect Android to Router via data cable > Turn on ‘Cellular data’ and ‘USB Tether’ in Phone to get access to high performing & long-range WiFi Internet.
Turn on WiFi in WiFi Enabled devices > Wait till Router WiFi Network comes live > Connect it with password (Key) generated in step 12 (###) and enjoy high-speed internet without any speed loss.
