Telecom Department is going to fine Bharti Airtel a massive amount of Rs 350 crore for the illegal 3G roaming agreements dealt with other two operator Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
Telecom Department asked Bharti Airtel to stop 3g service in 15 days across seven circles where Airtel has no legal 3g spectrum for third generation technology implementation.
Bharti Airtel has been asked to pay a penalty of Rs 350 crore total or or Rs 50 crore for each circle where they are running 3G services through roaming pacts.
DOT movements for the penalty has been approved by telecom Minister Kapil Sibal. Dot may send similar notice to two other members Vodafone and Idea cellular too.
Earlier, in 2010 auction for 3g spectrum, Airtel, Idea and Vodafone had won 3g spectrum in 13, 11, 9 circles respectively and none of the telecom networks were able to won PAN India license.
Then, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea entered into a 3g roaming agreement to offer 3g service(high speed internet and video telephony) using each other air waves in the circles where they don't have license to serve 3g technology.
